News

July 2025

I guess the biggest news is the fact I no longer live in Blacksburg, Va., a fact that makes me sad just writing about it.  We have moved to the Cleveland, Ohio, area.. Though I used to live in Ohio, I never expected to live here again.  It makes me very sad to not be in Blacksburg where I lived a long time after leaving Germany.  I guess the one positive thing I can say is that my studio in this much smaller house is a 6-windows-wide sunroom overlooking a small lake featuring many waterfowl like ducks, geese and herons.  I spend most of my time in this sun room turned  art studio painting mostly with oil.

This update will feature a number of my new paintings. Strange, but I actually used oil before any other medium many years ago but only briefly.  Most of my art has been watercolor, followed by lots of acrylic pieces and now I am really enjoying oil.  No, the house does not reek of the old oil smell.  The new products have virtually no smell at all.  I don't know how they made that happen, but it makes working with this medium a pleasure.

It has been a very long time since I updated this webpage.  I dreaded doing it because it would mean learning how all over again.  So far, however, it seems they have made the process much easier.  I have left this photo of me with my dear friends Nancy and Teri on the opening page because I miss them so much.  Weird that during the time of that photo we all lived in Blacksburg.  Now we are scattered to the winds in three different places.

To the right is my work Lemons and More, oil on canvas created at the wonderful Bay Arts building on the shore of Lake Erie. I have been honored to be included in the  Artemis journal  for all the editions from 2018, to the upcoming 2025 book. This first-class literary and art journal has been published annually for about 50 years and included over 1,000 artists and writers from the Appalachian Region of the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond. It is an enormous honor to be a part of it for all these years.

Stand Out, acyrlic, Artemis Journal sele

Stand Out, acrylic on canvas, was included in the 2018 Artemis Journal XXV, selected from among over 1,200 entries of art, photography, poetry and essays. The original sold in the Bath County Annual Sale in 2017. Once I knew Stand Out was selected for the Artemis Journal, it became the only piece I ever regretted selling.

Circle of Friends, acrylic, paper, mixed

Circle of Friends, acrylic on paper with mixed media, was selected for the 2018 Juried Exhibition at the Floyd Center for the Arts, Floyd, Virginia.  It is 1 in a 4-part series.

Room with a View, acrylic on Yupo, was selected for the 2018 Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition at the Roanoke College, Olin Gallery. This is the view from the dining room of Patrick and Monica Perin in La Garde, France.  I have learned a great deal from Monica, a magnificent water colorist.
